In this image, we get a close look at the many river mouths emptying into the Bay of Bengal along the coasts of Bangladesh and northeastern India. Due to heavy rainfall in the Himalayas, the rivers and the part of the bay near their mouths appears brown, colored by silt and sediments in the waters.

The Bay of Bengal is a bay that forms the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean. It resembles a triangle in shape, and is bordered by India and Sri Lanka to the West, Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal to the North, and Myanmar, the southern part of Thailand and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the East.

The Bay of Bengal occupies an area of 2,172,000 km². A number of large rivers – Ganges, Brahmaputra, Ayeyarwady, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri – flow into the Bay of Bengal. Since the rivers have high discharge outflows, particularly the Ganges River, the bay has much silt pushed into it. The Ganges River can be seen coming from the left, and the Jamuna River from the right. After converging, they form the Padma River, flowing past the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka.

The Bay of Bengal is a bay that forms the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean. It resembles a triangle in shape, and is bordered by India and Sri Lanka to the West, Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal to the North (where the name comes from), and Myanmar, southern part of Thailand and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the East. Its southern boundary extends as an imaginary line from Dondra Head at the southern end of Sri Lanka to the northern tip of Sumatra.

The Bay of Bengal occupies an area of 2,172,000 km². A number of large rivers – Ganges, Brahmaputra,Padma,Meghna,Jamuna,Ayeyarwady, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri – flow into the Bay of Bengal. Among the important ports are Cuddalore, Chennai, Kakinada, Tuticorin, Machilipatnam, Vishakapatnam, Paradip, Kolkata, Chittagong and Yangon.

In the 10th century the explosion of Indianized kingdoms, led by the Chola Empire, resulted in the Bay of Bengal being known as the Chola Lake. It later came to known as Bangal ki Khadi in Hindi after the region of Bengal.[1] Bengal comes from the Sanskrit Banga or Vanga which refers to the delta waters of the river Ganges.[2][3]

Rivers

The Sunderbans, at the mouth of river Ganges spreads across areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.

Many major rivers of India flow west to east into the Bay of Bengal: in the north, the Ganges River (or Ganga), Meghna River and Brahmaputra River rivers, and in the south Mahanadi River through the Mahanadi River Delta, Godavari River, Krishna River, Irrawaddy and Kaveri River (sometimes written as Cauvery) rivers. The shortest classified river which drains into the Bay of Bengal is Cooum River at 64 km. Brahmaputra is the 28th longest River in the World (2,948 km or 1,832 mi), and it discharges into the 'Bay of Bengal' and travels through India, P.R. China, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. The Sundarbans mangrove forest is formed at the delta of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. The Ayeyarwady River of Myanmar also flows into the bay.

Seaports

The Vizag seaport in India is the busiest port in the Bay of Bengal region in terms of cargo handled.

Major Bangladesh ports on the bay include Chittagong and Mongla. Major Indian ports on the bay include Krishnapatnam, Chennai (formerly Madras), Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), and Pondicherry. Yangon, the largest city and former capital of Myanmar is also an important port in the bay.

Islands

The islands in the bay are very numerous, including the Andaman, Nicobar and Mergui groups. The group of islands, Cheduba and others, in the north-east, off the Burmese coast, are remarkable for a chain of mud volcanoes, which are occasionally active. Great Andaman is the main archipelago or island group of the Andaman Islands, whereas Ritchie's Archipelago consists of smaller islands. Only 37 of the 572 islands and islets of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are inhabited, or 6.5%.[4]

Beaches

Cox's Bazar, one of the longest stretches of beaches in the world.[5]

Cox's Bazar, on the northeastern coast of the bay, is one of the longest unbroken natural beaches of the world. Other beaches along the bay are Bakkhali, Digha, Chandipur, Puri, Waltair, Marina Beach at Chennai and Ngapali beach in Myanmar.

Oceanography

Oceanography is the study of oceans and the ocean floor by scientific exploration and scientific methods. The Bay of Bengal is a salt water sea and is a part of the Indian Ocean.

[edit] Plate tectonics

Floor of Bay of Bengal  The Indian plate, shown in red  The Indo-Australian plate, shown in dull orange

The lithosphere of the earth is broken up into what are called tectonic plates. Underneath the Bay of Bengal is the Indian Plate which is part of the great Indo-Australian Plate and is slowly moving north east. This plate meets the Burma Microplate at the Sunda Trench. The Nicobar Islands, and the Andaman Islands are part of the Burma Microplate. The India Plate subducts beneath the Burma Plate at the Sunda Trench or Java Trench. Here, the pressure of the two plates on each other increase pressure and temperature resulting in the formation of volcanoes such as the volcanoes in Myanmar, and a volcanic arc called the Sunda Arc. Sumatra-Andaman earthquake and Asian Tsunami was a result of the pressure at this zone causing a submarine earthquake which then resulted in a huge Tsunamai.[6]

Marine geology

A zone 50 m wide extending from the island of Ceylon and the Coromandel coast to the head of the bay, and thence southwards through a strip embracing the Andaman and Nicobar islands, is bounded by the ioo fathom line of sea bottom; some 50 m. beyond this lies the Soo-fathom limit. Opposite the mouth of the Ganges, however, the intervals between these depths are very much extended by deltaic influence.

Swatch of No Ground is a 14 km-wide deep sea canyon of the Bay of Bengal. The deepest recorded area of this valley is about 1340 m.[7]

Marine biology, flora and fauna

The sunderbans bordering the Bay of Bengal is the largest single block of tidal halophytic mangrove forest in the world.[8]

The Bay of Bengal is full of biological diversity, diverging amongst coral reefs, estuaries, fish spawning and nursery areas, and mangroves. The Bay of Bengal is one of the World's 64 largest marine ecosystems.

Kerilia jerdonii is a sea snake of the Bay of Bengal. Glory of Bengal Cone (Conus bengalensis) is just one of the seashells which can be photographed along beaches of the Bay of Bengal.[9] An endangered species, the Olive Ridley sea turtle can survive because of the nesting grounds made available at the Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, Gahirmatha Beach, Orissa, India. Marlin, barracuda, skipjack tuna, (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna, Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphin (Sousa chinensis) , and Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni) are a few of the marine animals. Bay of Bengal Hogfish (Bodianus neilli) is a type of Wrass which live in turbid lagoon reefs or shallow coastal reefs. Schools of dolphins can be seen, whether they are the bottle nose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), Pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) or the spinner dolphin (stenella longirostris) . Tuna and dolphins are usually residing in the same waters. In shallower and warmer coastal waters the Irrawaddy Dolphins (Orcaella brevirostris) can be found.[10][11]

The Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve proides sanctuary to many animals some of which include the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) , giant Leatherback Sea Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) , and Malayan box turtle (Cuora amboinensis kamaroma) to name a few.

Another endangered species Royal Bengal Tiger is supported by Sundarbans a large estuarine delta that holds a mangrove area in the Ganges River Delta.[12][13]

Chemical oceanography

Coastal regions bordering the Bay of Bengal are rich in minerals. Sri Lanka, Serendib, or Ratna – Dweepa which means Gem Island. Amethyst, beryl, ruby, sapphire, topaz, and garnet are just some of the gems of Sri Lanka. Garnet and other precious gems are also found in abundance in the Indian states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.[14]

Physical oceanography - Climate of the Bay of Bengal

From January to October, the current is northward flowing, and the clockwise circulation pattern is called the "East Indian Current." The Bay of Bengal monsoon moves in a northwest direction striking the Nicobar Islands, and the Andaman Islands first end of May, then the North Eastern Coast of India by end of June.

The remainder of the year, the counterclockwise current is southwestward flowing, and the circulation pattern is called the East Indian Winter Jet. September and December see very active weather, season varsha (or monsoon), in the Bay of Bengal producing severe Cyclones which affect Eastern India. Several efforts have been initiated to cope with Storm surge.[15]

Tropical storms and cyclones

Historic sites

  • Kumari Kandam, an antediluvian civilization, (South India) is also held in myth to be under the Bay of Bengal. Fisherman claim their nets have snagged, and on dives to free them they find pagodas, doorways, and temples to reinforce their belief of this ancient time.[17]
  • The remains of Sri Vaisakheswara Swamy temple lies under the Bay of Bengal. Spokespersons from Andhra University Centre for Marine Archaeology say the temple may be located opposite the Coastal Battery.[18]
  • Seven Pagodas of Mahabalipuram is the name for Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram's Shore Temple was constructed in the eighth century AD and myth has it that six other temples were also built here.
  • Another historic site which has been preserved is Vivekanandar Illam. It was contstructed in 1842 by the Ice King Frederic Tudor to store and market ice year round. In 1897, Swami Vivekananda famous lectures were recorded here at Castle Kernan. The site is an exhibition devoted to Swami Vivekananda and his legacy.
  • Konark is the home of the Sun Temple or Black Pagoda. This Brahman sanctuary was built of black granite mid 1200 AD and has been declared a World Heritage Site.
  • Ramanathaswami Temple located at Dhanushkodi, where the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean come together.[19]

Economy

Arugam Point at the Arugam Bay in Sri Lanka beach attracts thousands of tourists

One of the first trading ventures along the Bay of Bengal was The Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies more commonly referred to as British East India Company. Gopalpur was one of their main trading centers. Other trading companies along the Bay of Bengal shorelines were English East India Company and French East India Company.[20]

BIMSTEC Bay of Bengal Initiative for MultiSectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) supports free trade internationally around the Bay of Bengal between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

The Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project is a new venture proposed which would create a channel for a shipping route to link the Gulf of Mannar with the Bay of Bengal. This would connect India east to west without the necessity of going around Sri Lanka.

Thoni and catamaran fishing boats of fishing villages thrive along the Bay of Bengal shorelines. Fishermen can catch between 26-44 species of marine fish.[21] In one year, the average catch is 2 million tons of fish from the Bay of Bengal alone.[22]

Strategic importance

Indian Navy's Presidential Fleet review held in Vizag in 2006. It was the first time the fleet was held ouside of Mumbai, signifying going strategic importance of Bay of Bengal to India.

The Bay of Bengal is strategically crucial for India because of the presence of outlying islands, namely Andaman islands and Nicobar islands and several major ports such as Kolkata and Vizag along its coast with the Bay of Bengal. Much of the naval operations of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War took place in the Bay of Bengal.[23]

The growing influence of China, due to support provided by Myanmar, has created geo-political implications for India.[24] India has held several major naval exercises with friendly countries, especially United States, to counter increasing Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean.[25][26] The largest ever wargame in Bay of Bengal was held in 2007 and naval warships from India, US, Singapore, Japan and Australia took part in it. This exercise was widely viewed as "strategic encirclement of China".[27] India has also forged naval cooperation agreements with Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia to increase its strategic reach in the region.[28] India also established Far Eastern Naval Command off Port Blair to increase surveillance in the adjoining Andaman Sea.[29]

The potential of natural gas exploitation also makes the Bay of Bengal important for India, Bangladesh and Myanmar.[30] Disputes over rights of some oil and gas blocks have caused brief diplomatic spats between India and Bangladesh.[31]

Environmental hazards

Pollution

"Asian Brown Cloud" hangs over the Bay of Bengal. It is considered to be a combination of vehicle exhaust, smoke from cooking fires, and industrial discharges.[32]

History

Ross Island, in the Andamans, was one of the main naval bases of British India during World War II

Due to continental drift, the India Plate split from Madagascar and collided with the Eurasian Plate resulting in the formation of the Himalayas and The Bay of Bengal.

Northern Circars occupied the western coast of the Bay of Bengal and is now considered to be India's Madras state. The Kakatiya dynasty reached the western coastline of the Bay of Bengal between the Godavari and the Krishna rivers. Kushanas about the middle of the 1st century AD invaded northern India perhaps extending as far as the Bay of Bengal. Chola dynasty (9th century to 12th century) when ruled by Rajaraja Chola I occupied the western coastline of the Bay of Bengal circa AD 1014 Chandragupta Maurya extended the Maurya Dynasty across Northern India to the Bay of Bengal. Hajipur was a stronghold of Portuguese Pirates. In the 1500s the Portuguese built trading posts in the North of the Bay of Bengal at Chittagong (Porto Grande) and Satgaon (Porto Pequeno).[33]

British penal colony

Cellular Jail or "Black Waters" built in 1896 on Ross Island, a part of the Andaman Island Chain. As early as 1858 this island was used as a British penal colony for politial prisoners facing life imprisonment.

Marine archeology

Maritime archaeology or marine archaeology is the study of material remains of ancient peoples. A specialized branch, Archaeology of shipwrecks studies the salvaged artifacts of ancient ships. Stone anchors, amphorae sherds, elephant tusks, hippopotamus teeth, ceramic pottery, a rare wood mast and lead ingots are examples which may survive the test of time for archaeologists to study and place the salvaged findings into a time line of history. Coral reefs, tsuanamis, cyclones, mangrove swamps, battles and a criss cross of sea routes in a high trading area combined with pirating have all contributed to shipwrecks in the Bay of Bengal.[34]

Famous ships and shipwrecks
  • 1778 to 1783 The Naval operations in the American Revolutionary War or American War of Independence ranged as far as the Bay of Bengal.
  • c1816 Mornington Ship burned in the Bay of Bengal[35]
  • 1850 American clipper brig Eagle is supposed to have sunk in a Bay of Bengal[36]
  • American Baptist missionary Adoniram Judson, Jr. died April 12, 1850 and was buried at sea in the Bay of Bengal.

Saturday Night Live-Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan credits his 30 Rock co-star Alec Baldwin with helping him kick booze and turn his life around. The comedian violated his probation on a driving under the influence (DUI) charge last year when he was accused of drunkenly groping a female DJ. As punishment, he was forced to wear an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet.

Morgan has been in recovery since, and describes himself as a "functioning alcoholic" - and he insists Baldwin has played a large part in his rehabilitation.

He says, "Alec was the main one counseling me. He's a passionate dude. I don't give a f--- what nobody say about him, dude been there. 'You got an opportunity on 30 Rock,' he told me. I felt the love when he do that."

On a lighter note, Morgan is angry people often mistake him for the buffoon he plays in sitcom 30 Rock - insisting it takes intelligence to play someone that stupid.

The comedian plays TV star Tracy Jordan in the hit comedy, a character some fans have confused for his real life persona. But he's really the opposite of Jordan, because he claims it requires brains and skill to properly portray an idiot.

He says, "He's my alter ego, he's not me. Some people believe everything they see on TV. People, it's called tel-lee-vision. You have to be highly intelligent to get away with a dumb joke. That takes a pretty smart fella."

Morgan was born in The Bronx, New York, the son of Jimmy Morgan, a musician.[1] After attending De Witt Clinton High School in the Bronx, he was discovered in 1984 while doing stand-up at The Apollo. Tracy Morgan began his career on Martin, where he played Hustle Man. The character sold random items he had from the 'hood, always greeting people with his trademark "What's happ'n, chief?" In the 2003 movie Head of State, starring Chris Rock, Morgan appears several times as a man watching television, often questioning why they aren't watching Martin.

Tracy was also a regular cast member on "Uptown Comedy Club", a sketch comedy show filmed in Harlem, New York City which aired from 1992 to 1994 on various channels. It had a predominantly African-American cast, but there were a couple of white performers, notably Jim Breuer. He was also on the HBO show Snaps.

Morgan joined the cast of comedy show Saturday Night Live in 1996, where he performed as a regular until 2003. Morgan performed a variety of characters on the program, including Brian Fellows, Dominican Lou, Bishop Don "Mack" Donald (from Pimp Chat), Astronaut Jones, African Andy, Benny the Bengal, and Woodrow. Morgan is also credited with impressions of Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Maya Angelou, Samuel L. Jackson, Mike Tyson, Judge Greg Mathis, Lou Bega, Oprah Winfrey, and Star Jones.

Morgan had his own show, The Tracy Morgan Show, in 2003, which was cancelled after one season.

Morgan also had a stand-up special entitled "One Mic," that was shown on Comedy Central. Morgan was the host of the first Spike Guys' Choice Awards, which aired on June 13, 2007. In 2003, he was on an episode of Punk'd in which his car was towed from the valet parking. He can be heard as "Spoonie Luv" on the Comedy Central program Crank Yankers and as Woof in the MTV2 Animated Series Where My Dogs At?.

Morgan acted in commercials for ESPN NFL 2K, ESPN NBA 2K, and ESPN NHL 2K where he co-starred with Warren Sapp, Ben Wallace and Jeremy Roenick. He appeared in the movie The Longest Yard, starring Adam Sandler, as a transvestite inmate. Morgan is currently a cast member of the NBC television show 30 Rock, playing the character Tracy Jordan, a caricature of himself.

Morgan has hosted the "VH1 Hip Hop Honors" for 4 consecutive years.

Morgan hosts the third season of Scare Tactics, the Sci-Fi Channel's gruesome hidden camera show that "punks" people by using their worst fears against them.

On December 2, 2005, Morgan was arrested in Hollywood on impaired driving charges. He later pled no contest to a misdemeanor drunken driving charge stemming from the incident.[2] On November 28, 2006, Morgan was again arrested and charged with DWI, this time in Manhattan.[3]

On May 10, 2007, a female disc jockey in Miami filed a misdemeanor battery complaint against Morgan, saying he groped her in a radio station studio. Morgan's shows for that night and the next night at the Improv Comedy Club in Coconut Grove were cancelled. As of May 10, 2007, police have not yet decided whether to file charges.[4] According to reports from the scene Morgan smelled of alcohol, a potential violation of his probation for a DUI charge. Morgan had already been scheduled to be fitted with a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM) ankle bracelet on May 25 in Los Angeles, to test his skin for alcohol vapors every 30 minutes for 90 days. On September 19, 2007 Morgan has been ordered to wear the monitoring bracelet for another 80 days as a result of the comedian admitting that he had violated a prior agreement to abstain from alcohol.[5] Repeat violations can result in a jail sentence.[6]

Nigger Nigger - Paul Mooney

He might sound like it but hes really doing it to be funny and most of its true. but he has white friends but i will admit that he carries a little bitterness only because he had to deal with racism in his life but he is really cool though hes not a racist.

Paul Mooney was born in Louisiana, and later grew up in Oakland, California. Mooney became a ringmaster with the Charles Gody Circus. During his stint as ringmaster, he always found himself writing comedy and telling jokes, which would later help Mooney land his first professional work as a writer for Richard Pryor.

Paul Mooney initially appeared in the sketches Ask a Black Dude and Mooney on Movies on Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show, which he later replaced with Negrodamus, the African American version of Nostradamus. As Negrodamus, Mooney ad-libbed the "answers to life's most unsolvable mysteries" such as "Why do white people love Wayne Brady?" (Answer: "Because Wayne Brady makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X.") Mooney was planning to reprise his role as Negrodamus in the third season of the Chappelle's Show, before its abrupt hiatus.

In 2006, Paul Mooney hosted the BET tribute to Black History Month titled 25 Most @#%! Moments in Black History. In this show, he narrated some of the most shameful incidents involving African Americans since 1980. The top 25 moments included incidents involving Marion Barry, Terrell Owens, Wilson Goode, Michael Jackson, Flavor Flav, Whitney Houston, and Tupac Shakur amongst others.

Much of Mooney's material is based on race relations in the U.S. His approach has caused many offended audience members to walk out on his performances. Such incidents can be heard on Mooney's comedy albums Race and Master Piece and seen in his DVD Know Your History: Jesus Is Black; So Was Cleopatra, and Paul Mooney: Analyzing White America.

In September 2005, Mooney performed a segment at the 2005 BET Comedy Awards called the "Nigga Wake Up Call Award", in which he jokingly presents an award to African American celebrities who have had well-publicized legal troubles. The "nominees" included Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Lil' Kim and Diana Ross. Mooney awarded Ross and made numerous jokes about Ross's 2002 arrest for DUI. According to people who were in attendance, Mooney also made light of the death of Ross' ex-husband Arne Næss Jr., who fell 160 feet while mountain climbing in 2004.[1][2] Tracee Ellis Ross, Ross' daughter and Næss stepdaughter, was also in attendance. She reportedly was so offended and embarrassed that she left the room and was comforted by host Steve Harvey. Backstage in the press room, Mooney was asked if he felt his performance was "over the top". Mooney replied:

How can somebody get arrested for (being under the influence) and go to jail and I be over the top? I think that's over the top, don't you? Agree or disagree, folks. No, comedy is not over the top. When you are a celebrity and you do crazy stuff, that's the game.

When Mooney was informed that Tracee Ellis Ross was in the audience, he stated:

I didn't know ... her mama could've been in there, that's not the point. I didn't drive drunk. Now I'm responsible for Diana Ross? If you scrutinize Jay Leno and David Letterman the same way you scrutinize me, then I'll agree with you, but if you don't touch them white folks don't touch me. They say what ever they want to say every night.[3]

The majority of Mooney's performance was edited out of the televised broadcast.

During a 2006 performance at the Apollo Theater in which Mooney was taping a segment for Showtime at the Apollo, his performance was stopped in the middle of his act allegedly due to his criticisms of President George W. Bush. Mooney appeared on The Howard Stern Show on October 30, 2006 where he talked about the performance including bringing in his road manager as a witness. During the act he made several jokes about Bush including one likening him to the devil and one stating that his mother looked like the "guy on the Quaker Oats box",[4] and was immediately pulled from the stage. A forty-five minute debate ensued in his dressing room in which they decided to cancel the rest of his act. Mooney was told that he had "offended unnamed officials from Time Warner",[5] which operates Showtime at the Apollo. A Time Warner spokeswoman called the story "ridiculous... it's absolutely untrue" that the company had anything to do with the incident.

On November 26, 2006, Mooney appeared on CNN and talked about how he would stop using the n-word due to Michael Richards' outbursts on stage at The Laugh Factory. He referred to Richards as having become "his Dr. Phil" and "cured" him of the use of the epithet. Mooney also said, "We're gonna stop using the n-word. I'm gonna stop using it. I'm not gonna use it again and I'm not gonna use the b-word. And we're gonna put an end to the n-word. Just say no to the n-word. We want all human beings throughout the world to stop using the n-word." On November 30, he elaborated upon these remarks as a guest of Farai Chideya on the National Public Radio program "News & Notes." He declared that he would convene a conference on this controversial subject in the near future, as well as perform his first "n-free" comedy in the upcoming days.

That show, which he performed at the Lincoln Theater following a set by Dick Gregory, took place at 8:00 PM on Saturday, December 2, 2006. Mooney almost made it through his entire set--about an hour of jokes--before he mistakenly used the word in a routine on O.J. Simpson. He ran off stage covering his face in his hands, and sheepishly walked back on a few moments later saying, "I'm really going to get it now. This is probably already on the Internet." On the BET special "25 Events that Mis-Shaped Black America," Mooney reiterated that he was no longer using the n-word. He was quoted as saying, "I am no longer going to use the n-word. Instead of saying 'What's up my nigga,' say 'What's up my Michael Richards.'"

About CodeWeavers

CodeWeavers' mission is to make Linux and Mac OS X fully Windows compatible operating systems. We do this through the power of Wine, which powers all of our CrossOver products. The CrossOver products make it possible to run Windows programs on Mac OS X and Linux without needing a copy or license for Windows itself.

About Wine

Wine is an open-source reimplementation of the Win32 API for Unix-based operating systems. Wine allows Windows applications to be run without a Windows operating system license. CodeWeavers is the largest corporate sponsor of the Wine Project, and contributes all of its work to free Wine.

CodeWeavers' site is getting crunched under the massive demand for the free versions of CrossOver, so there is now a minimal site at down.codeweavers.com that will accept your email address; you will be mailed your registration code in the next couple of days.

CodeWeavers is a company that sells a proprietary version of Wine called CrossOver, for running Windows applications on Mac OS X and Linux. The company was founded in 1996 as a consultancy, eventually moving entirely over to Wine development and support. The CrossOver version of Wine is regularly refreshed with the latest free Wine patches; likewise, patches from the company's employees are sent back to the project almost immediately. This distinguishes the company from TransGaming, which develops a forked version of Wine called Cedega, and no longer returns contributions to free Wine. CodeWeavers is a major contributor to the Wine project, a free software / open-source software project that helps Windows applications run on different x86-based operating systems, and employs the project's maintainer, Alexandre Julliard, as their CTO.

The Company's products include CrossOver Pro Linux, CrossOver Pro Mac, CrossOver Games for Linux, and CrossOver Games for Mac. CrossOver Server was discontinued in 2007 as CrossOver Pro replaced its functionality. The company's products have traditionally focused on making Microsoft software staples like Microsoft Office, MS Word, and MS Excel run on Linux. With the addition of CrossOver Pro Mac the company has also begun focusing on games and other applications not available natively on the Mac platform, such as MS Visio and MS Project. CrossOver Games was introduced in March 2008 and is intended to allow gaming-related patches from Wine to be incorporated into CrossOver much faster. The CrossOver Pro product line will focus on stability and in-depth testing with supported productivity software, such as Microsoft Office, and will have a slower release cycle.

CodeWeavers also provides implementation and consulting services around Wine and other open-source software projects. Google has paid CodeWeavers to improve support for Adobe Photoshop and add functionality to Wine.

CodeWeavers is also a founding member of the Desktop Linux Consortium.

Word from CodeWeavers execs is that the free license will be for a download-only flavor of the Pro version (!), including the Games optimized build and the option to share a Windows 'bottle' among multiple users on the same machine. You will have to choose either the Mac or Linux product for your free copy (and I'm looking forward to the stats on that split once the dust settles). Pro licenses are eligible for support/update renewals after one year for $35.
A number of commenters have pointed out that the original challenge rules said the giveaway day would be on the first of the month following the goal, meaning Nov. 1 instead of Oct. 28. CodeWeavers' press release confirms that the giveaway day will be 10/28 and not 11/1. The giveaway runs from midnight to midnight CST.

Anchor at Fox Sports Net-Danyelle Sargent

Danyelle Sargent has had her share of on air gaffe’s in her career. Danyelle Sargent thought that Bill Walsh was still alive when interviewing Mike Singletary on the Fox Sports Network.

“I heard that your mentor Bill Walsh was one of the first phone calls that you made when you found out that you had the job. What does it mean to you to be the head coach of the 49ers?”

Who spotted the issue?  Oh yeah Bill Walsh, the legendary coach, passed away in July of 2007.  She was informed through her ear piece of her mistake and the video never aired, but it was left available online and she now has some new fame to deal with.

Danyelle Sargent was a reporter for ESPN when she gained some Internet fame in 2006 when she was doing some highlights and during a clip you heard her say loudly “What the f*&k was that?”  Since that incident she has moved on to FOX Sports and was covering the San Francisco 49ers game this weekend when she got a chance to interview new 49ers coach Mike Singletary.  She proceeded to ask him a question that went like above.

Education and early career

She is a graduate of Florida State University and began her television career at WGXA, in Macon, GA.

Prior to joining ESPN, she had previously worked as a sports reporter and anchor for Metro Sports, a local Time Warner Cable sports channel in Kansas City.

Sargent served as co-emcee of the 2005 and 2006 NCAA woman of the year awards.

Sargent was hired in 2004, by the television network, ESPN, to work on their ESPNEWS channel. She also contributed to ESPN2's Cold Pizza, now titled ESPN First Take.

Sargent was the product of minor controversy on March 9, 2006 when Sargent was co-anchoring a live broadcast of ESPNEWS and a series of technical difficulties occurred, leading ESPN to air a taped segment played. Thinking their microphones had been cut (which is the normal procedure when airing a taped segment), she exclaimed "What the fuck was that?" over the broadcast.[1]

Another controversy occurred on Sunday October 26, 2008, while working as a sideline reporter for Fox Sports, Sargent was interviewing the new head coach of the San Francisco 49ers Mike Singletary, and said "I heard that your mentor Bill Walsh was one of the first phone calls that you made when you found out that you had the job. What does it mean to you to be the head coach of the 49ers?""; the interview was abruptly halted when the reporter was informed by her producers that Walsh had in fact died on July 30, 2007.

Travis Lane Stork-American ER doctor and television personality-

american idol 2008 arrivals 220508

Former star of ‘The Bachelor‘ and current host of ‘The Doctors‘, Travis Stork, is said to be dating singer and American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. Witnesses spotted him backstage at her concert in Nashville, and when asked if they were dating, he reportedly “smiled broadly”. Whatever that means.

Education

Travis Stork graduated magna cum laude from Duke University and earned his MD from the University of Virginia.

Career

He completed his emergency medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

He is an outdoors enthusiast and enjoys mountain and road biking, kayaking and hiking.

Travis is now interviewing with Vail area hospitals to place after his residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center is complete. Vail Colorado is also noted to be the home of The Bachelorette stars Trista and Ryan Sutter.

As of April 2007, Travis Stork lives in Breckenridge, CO.

The Bachelor

On the season finale of The Bachelor, Travis Stork chose school teacher, Sarah Stone, who coincidentally lived only a few blocks away from his Nashville residence. In the end, the relationship dissolved due to contractual obligations that required them to be apart until the final episode aired. Both deny that there are any hard feelings about the breakup and are still friends.

The Doctors

In 2007, Stork was chosen to host The Doctors, a daytime medical/talk show that will debut in September 2008. In the series, Stork will head a panel of medical experts as they discuss health issues and answer audience questions. The idea came about from a series of segments that were featured on Dr. Phil, for which Stork is a frequent contributor.

Flat Belly Diet Jumpstart

Lose the pooch fast beginning with the Flat Belly Diet 4-Day Jumpstart. Avoid these foods to reduce bloat, water retention, and belly puff.

The Anti-Bloat Jumpstart isn’t just about beating bloat; The 4-day plan includes a prescribed list of foods and drinks you can eat that will help flush out fluid, reduce water retention, and relieve digestive issues like gas and constipation, which can make your belly puff unnecessarily. You’ll drink Sassy Water (a signature recipe developed by Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, creator and coauthor of the Flat Belly Diet®) while eating healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

Here is a partial list of the foods you'll need to avoid during the first four days:

1. The salt shaker, salt-based seasonings, and highly processed foods
Water is attracted to sodium, so when you take in higher than usual amounts of sodium, you’ll temporarily retain more fluid—which contributes to a sluggish feeling, a puffy appearance, and extra water weight.

2. Excess carbs
As a backup energy source, your muscles store a type of carbohydrate called glycogen. Every gram of glycogen is stored with about 3 grams of water. But unless you’re running a marathon tomorrow, you don’t need all this stockpiled fuel. Decreasing your carbohydrate intake temporarily can train your body to access this stored fuel and burn it off. At the same time, you’ll be draining off all that excess stored fluid.

3. Bulky raw foods

A half-cup serving of cooked carrots delivers the same nutrition as one cup raw, but it takes up less room in your GI tract. Eat only cooked vegetables, smaller portions of unsweetened dried fruit, and canned fruits in natural juice. This will allow you to meet your nutrient needs without expanding your GI tract with extra volume.

4. Gassy foods
Certain foods simply create more gas in your GI tract. They include legumes, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, peppers, and citrus fruits.

5. Chewing gum
You probably don’t realize this, but when you chew gum, you swallow air. All that air gets trapped in your GI tract and causes pressure, bloating, and belly expansion.

Cook for a Flat Belly

se these cooking techniques not only to eat healthier but to lose belly fat! From the new Flat Belly Diet Cookbook

You know by now that the healthy fats and other nutrients that make MUFA foods heavyweight champs nutritionally and gastronomically also make them dense in calories. By their very definition, MUFA foods are high in fat—albeit the good-for-you variety. So when it comes to following the Flat Belly food plan and staying within the daily calorie and sodium guidelines, it’s especially important to have a full arsenal of cooking techniques that don’t add unnecessary fat and calories.

Here are our favorite quick-and-easy, low-fat and low-sodium cooking methods. They’re well suited to bringing out the full flavor of MUFA foods, and we’ve provided a few key tried-and-true test kitchen tips for each one.

ROASTING TRANSFORMS VEGETABLES

Virtually any vegetable benefits from being tossed with a little canola oil, a pinch of kosher salt, and some freshly ground black pepper and then roasted at fairly high heat (400°F+) for 30 to 45 minutes or until nicely browned, with crisped edges and tender middles (poke with a fork, skewer, or small knife).

Make sure to roast in a shallow baking dish—the bottom of a broiler pan or even a rimmed cookie sheet is fine—so the hot air surrounds the veggies and browns them nicely. Avoid deep casseroles and don’t cover the dish, or you won’t get the desirable color or crispiness.

If you’re new to roasting, here are some of our favorite transformations: Pale, bland cauliflower caramelizes to golden brown and takes on rich nutty flavor. Brussels sprouts lose the bitterness that turns so many of us against them in childhood; gone, too, is the mushiness that often results from stove-top steaming—roasted sprouts are sweet and pleasingly crisp-tender. Carrots go from run-of-the-mill to savory-rich. Sliced first into thin circles, potatoes emerge from the oven with a crispy chiplike crust surrounding a tender center and prove a worthy rival of french fries; combine with similarly slivered yams for a more colorful, flavorful, and nutrient-rich side dish.

POACHING IS PERFECT FOR FISH

Poaching is a superbly simple way to quickly and gently infuse flavor without adding fat. Immerse fillets of any mild-flavored, firm-fleshed fish in barely simmering liquid and cook until just opaque all the way through—typically, 20 to 30 minutes, depending on thickness.

Our favorite poaching fishes include salmon, sea bass, cod, and halibut. For a quick poaching liquid: Roughly chop a carrot or two, a stalk of celery, and an onion; add to a pan of water with a splash of vinegar or lemon juice; and toss in a few whole black peppercorns, a bay leaf, a sprinkling of kosher salt, and fresh herbs (like dill) you happen to have around. Remove the fish and vegetables when done and turn up the heat to reduce the poaching liquid to a sauce.

SLOW-COOKING MAKES THE WHOLE MEAL--AHEAD OF TIME

Slow cookers have earned a permanent position on many a kitchen countertop because they offer a combination of convenience, taste, and versatility that no other appliance can match. They’re veritable miracle workers for cooks looking to maximize flavor and minimize fat—low-fat proteins, lean cuts of meat, and dried beans alike slow cook to succulent perfection.

There are a few basic rules to consider: For example, cut raw meat into pieces and place them at the bottom of the slow cooker so that it heats up relatively quickly, and make sure cooking times are specific to your appliance (they’re different for 3-quart versus 6- quart). It’s most important to acquaint yourself with the instructions that come with your slow cooker, especially those concerning food safety, before using.

GRILLING CAN'T BE BEAT

For fast, low-fat, flavorful meat, grilling is the way to go. Cooking over a flame drains off fat while imparting delicious smoky flavor to meat, chicken, and seafood. For speed and simplicity, select proteins that cook within about 25 minutes over direct heat, such as steaks and chops, chicken pieces, fish steaks, tofu, and burgers—or skewer variations of these in cubed or meatball form.

Keep foods moist and flavors full by searing on all sides to lock in juices and marinating proteins before grilling. If you like, baste with marinade a few times while cooking. Cook seafood just until opaque at the center, but don’t rely on visual appearance to judge doneness of meat or chicken. Instead, invest in an instant-read thermometer, which is much more reliable. Remove meat from the grill when it’s within 10 degrees of doneness. Set it aside for several minutes while the temperature continues to rise. It’s ready to serve when the thermometer reaches the temperature for doneness.

STIR-FRY FOR A SWIFT, ONE-DISH MEAL

A little oil and a lot of heat add up to a superfast, low-fat cooking method. Stir-frying requires some slicing and dicing up front but pays off big with meals that cook up in as little as 10 minutes. It’s the ideal route for cooks who like to prep ingredients in advance and then throw a delicious dinner together at top speed when mealtime comes.

No time to chop veggies? Buy them prewashed and precut—consider raiding the supermarket salad bar for a wide variety
of ready-to-cook veggies in whatever proportion and quantity you fancy. Another advantage of stir-frying: It allows you to experiment with infinite combinations of proteins and vegetables. Thin strips or slices cook quickly and evenly over high heat—vegetables retain flavor and crisp-tenderness, while proteins stay tender.

Here are our favorite stir-fry secrets: Roll tofu cubes or strips of chicken in sesame seeds for a delicious crunch. Use baby vegetables, which are sweet (to look at and to taste) and require little to no prep. Stir in a cup of frozen chopped spinach (slightly thawed) for 1 minute before your stir-fry is done to add color, iron, and flavor.

Eat and Think Your Way Thin

What you eat is only half the equation. The other half is your attitude toward food. Follow these simple rules for trimming that tummy!

The idea that fat can help you slim down isn't new to the Flat Belly Diet. In 2001, Harvard researchers reported a that moderate-fat diet actually produced better weight loss results in the long run than a low-fat diet. But not until the Spanish study did researchers uncover the notion that a single type of dietary fat targets such a specific area of the body.

Monounsaturated fats (MUFAs for short, pronounced MOO-fahs) come from the healthy oils found in plant foods such as olives, nuts, and avocado. MUFAs have been linked to overall weight loss in previous studies, including a report published in the British Journal of Nutrition, which found that a MUFA-rich diet helped people lose small amounts of weight and body fat without changing their calorie intake. Another report found that a breakfast high in MUFAs could boost calorie burn for 5 hours after the meal, particularly in people with higher amounts of belly fat.

Add “Read More” Expandable

This is a pretty popular Blogger hack that lots of people have asked me about. Instead of answering to each email individually, I thought it would make more sense to write an article about it.

With this hack, you can choose to display a select amount of text from the beginning of each post as a teaser instead of showing the entire post on the front page of your blog. Then when people want to read the rest of the post, they can click a “read more” link to see the full post. This is very handy if you have lots of long articles all on one page. (Note that you’ll need to have post pages enabled in order to make this feature work.)

Step #1 - Update Your Template Code

First you need to edit your existing code so I recommend copying and pasting it into notepad or any text editor. Also, it’s smart at this point to create a backup of your template just in case something goes wrong. Now do a search (CTRL + F) within the text editor for the following code post-header-line-1. This is the default code that Blogger includes but some custom templates remove or change this code so you might have trouble finding it. If you can’t locate this text then try searching for <data:post.body/> instead. Your template will for sure have this since it’s the tag that actually prints the body of your post.

Now depending on which code you were able to find will determine how easy the next steps will be. You might need to do some detective work first in order to get this working properly in your custom template. The idea is to get this new code into your template before the <data:post.body/> tag. Keep reading and hopefully the explanation will illustrate the concept clear enough so you are able to adapt this hack to your custom template.

Add the following code below the <div class=’post-header-line-1′/> and <div class=’post-header-line’> tags if you’ve got both.

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<style>.fullpost{display:inline;}</style>
<p><data:post.body/></p>
<b:else/>
<style>.fullpost{display:none;}</style>

The result should look something like this:

new-code-block.png

If you don’t have the default <div class='post-header-line-1'/> tag then your result should look something like this instead. This is how it would be done in the MushBlue Blogger custom template:

new-code-block-mush.png

Notice in both examples that the code in yellow and the <data:post.body/> tags are the same — it’s just tag above it that will differ based on the template you’re using.

Now let’s add one more bit of code which will actually create the “read more” link in your post. This code will go below the <data:post.body/> tag so copy the following and paste it in. Feel free to change the “Read more…” text to whatever you want the link to look like. Be careful not to delete any other code during this process.

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType != "item"'><br />
<a expr:href='data:post.url'>Read more...</a>
</b:if>
</b:if>

Yes, there are supposed to be two </b:if> tags in the above code so don’t think it’ s a mistake. The result should look like this:

new-code-block-2.png

This code will be the same no matter what template you are using. Just make sure it goes below the <data:post.body/> as shown in the image above.

Now let’s look at what the final result should be. Here’s the updated code block you just worked on all put together:

new-code-block-3.png

Ok, you’re all done editing the template code. Paste it back into your Blogger html window and save it. If you get an error, you made a mistake. The most common mistake is to accidentally delete a > or < while pasting in the new code. If it saved successfully, it’s time to move onto the next step and modify a quick Blogger format setting.

Step #2 - Add a Class Tag in Your Default Post Template

For this step, you need to navigate in your Blogger account to “Settings” => “Formatting” and scroll all the way down to the bottom. It’s the last option called “Post Template”. You’re going to paste in the following code:

<span class="fullpost">

</span>

You’ll want to keep the spaces in there which will make sense later. After you save this, it will look like this:

post-template2.png

Step #3 - Create a New Post

Ok, we’ve got everything all setup so it’s time to go and test it out. Hopefully you’ve got a new post in mind for your blog. If not, then we’ll just create a test post which you can later delete. When you click on the “Posting” tab, you’ll notice that the post text area is now pre-populated with the <span class=”fullpost”> and </span> tags. If not, then you didn’t save it properly so go back and re-read step #2.

So when writing your new post, anything you put above the <span class=”fullpost”> tag will be the teaser text. The main body of your post needs to go in between the <span class=”fullpost”> and </span> tags in order for the “read more…” link to work properly. See the screenshot below. Sometimes pictures illustrate better than words.

post-template-result2.png

Now publish or preview your post to see the “read more” hack working on your blog. If it doesn’t show up for some reason, go back and run through the steps again. Most likely you pasted the code blocks in the wrong places. It’s difficult to troubleshoot these issues since each template can be unique so please make sure to double-check your template before asking for help in the comments section below.

Here’s the live post with the “read more…” link properly working based on the text I used above in the post text area.

Additional Info

If you want to go back and update your old posts with this new “read more…” feature you can. Just go back and edit each post manually. Essentially you’ll need to paste in the <span class=”fullpost”> and </span> tags breaking apart the post into two parts.

For some posts, you might not want to use this feature at all. If that’s the case, just delete the <span class=”fullpost”> and </span> tags from within your new post text area. Then your new post will show up entirely just like it used to before you implemented this hack. Enjoy!
